The Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg Address, inscribed and illustrated by Sam Fink, published by Welcome Books, 2007
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Wow! What a wonderful place to learn about our 16th President! On exhibit in the library were framed pictures of each page from Sam Fink’s “The Gettysburg Address”. I was so impressed that when I returned home, I bought the book.
I have read Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address more than once and still remember having to memorize it when I was in school, but going through it in Fink’s book, with his marvelous illustrations really helped me understand it in a deeper way. In this oversized book, Fink breaks the speech into illustrated phrases on each page. On opposite pages are small illustrations and quotes by or about Lincoln. At the end there is a chronology and an illustrated page with the Thirteenth amendment to the Constitution. I think this is a wonderful book for anyone to read and it should be a must in any classroom where Abraham Lincoln is studied.
