How will this activity promote student learning?
Students will have a hands on experience with nineteenth century artifacts. They will be examining, analyzing and interpreting primary sources. Working in teams, they will make hypotheses about their artifact’s purpose. They will defend their hypotheses in front of the group and take questions before being presented with the artifact’s actual purpose. Follow up can be done that tie in many of Kentucky’s Curriculum on Historical Perspective. In addition to using historical perspective content, students will be engaging in many of the SLO ( Speaking, Listening, Observing) objectives in KDE’s curriculum guide as well as using scientific processes to observe and draw conclusions.
For what grade level is the activity best suited?
Lessons are geared for fourth through eighth grades but can be adapted for primary grades. The activity could also be used at high school level with apprpriate teacher follow up.
How long will the activity last?
The activity will be part of the total field trip experience. We recommend scheduling a minimum of two hours on the site which would result in about a half hour for the activity. Some classes may be able to schedule two and a half hours, which would be the ideal.
I have a group that is larger than your 60 person maximum capacity. How can we schedule to take advantage of Artifact Adventures?
We have no choice in our maximum capacity size due to the limited amount of physical space for the tour and in our activity room. We encourage you to schedule on two separate days but if that is not possible we will work with you to schedule a two hour group in the morning and a second group 2 1/2 hours later.
Will I need to do any preparation with my students prior to coming?
We have printable handouts on the website available for our field trips. There is a vocabulary sheet for Artifact Adventures so that students will be familiar with some of the terms they will hear.
Do we need to bring anything?
All materials used during the activity will be provided.
